Biography

Michael Adewumi is Professor of Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering and Vice Provost for Global Programs at Penn State. He is also the Quentin E. and Louise L. Wood Faculty Fellow in Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering at Penn State University. In his role as Vice Provost for Global Programs, he provides leadership for all of Penn State's global engagements, ranging from hosting thousands of students from more than 100 countries to sending thousands of Penn State students to more than 200 study abroad programs overseas and building strategic partnerships with institutions around the world. The Global Programs office supports and promotes the development of the International dimension that pervades Penn State's integration of teaching, research/scholarship, service, and outreach. The office also facilitates greater appreciation of cross-cultural relations and global issues, and enhances the position of the University and the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania in the international arena. Prior to assuming this position in October 2007, Professor Adewumi was the Executive Director of AESEDA (The Alliance for Earth Sciences, Engineering and Development in Africa (AESEDA), whose mission it is to develop and foster interdisciplinary framework for integrating research, education and outreach aimed at harnessing georesources for sustainable livelihoods in Africa. This is a major international multidisciplinary partnership among Penn State University, a select group of African Universities, select Historically Black Colleges and Universities (HBCUs) in the U.S. and public and private-sector organizations with the mission to develop and foster interdisciplinary research and partnerships. Professor Adewumi is internationally known as an expert in the areas of natural gas engineering, phase behavior and multiphase fluid dynamics in pipes and has published widely in these areas. He has taught short courses for multinational oil companies around the world. His research efforts with graduate students have produced more than 40 Ph.D. and M.S. degrees as well as the supervision of 10 post-doctoral research associates. He is the author and/or co-author of more than 100 publications. He is a member of the Society of Petroleum Engineers, American Chemical Society, American Society of Mechanical Engineers, and the Nigerian Academy of Engineers. Professor Adewumi previously held a number of administrative and governance positions at Penn State, including serving as Chair of the Petroleum and Natural Gas Engineering graduate program and the on-line Master of Engineering Program in Oil and Gas Engineering Management. In addition, he has served Penn State University as a member and/or chair of committees at all levels (Departmental, College and University).
